Narratives play a prominent theme in junior Jace Hermanto’s artistic practice. He became interested in mythology at a young age because of its use of fictional worlds and creatures. While earning his associate’s degree at Pellissippi State Community College, Hermanto’s painting and drawing told stories that allowed him to escape from real-world issues.

Series of Student Expressions

Profile

The UT student art competition in the Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture is an annual School of Art spring highlight. The competition is the longest continuously running student art competition in the United States. Initiated in 1947 by our first department head, C. Kermit “Buck” Ewing, this year marks the competition’s 71st straight year. This is an amazing record of longevity and strength. Juried by nationally recognized artists, critics, and designers, thousands of selected students have exhibited their creative work in this venue. The art competition exhibition is widely popular with students and the public. Any UT student is invited to compete. In conjunction with the competition, awards and other prizes are presented to winning entries in Fine Art, Art History, and Graphic Design categories and students are encouraged to sell their work. In the 2017 spring competition, students were awarded a total of $7,050.

The School of Art’s student-run exhibition space, Gallery 1010, moved to a new location at 1150 McCalla Avenue in downtown Knoxville last fall. Established in the 1980s by Don Kurka, former department head and professor of painting and drawing, the gallery derived its name from its first location in the historic Candy Factory building in World’s Fair Park, the address of which, at the time, was 1010 Clinch Avenue. In 2005, it relocated to a space on Gay Street, opposite the UT Downtown Gallery. In its new and improved home on McCalla, the gallery continues its three-decade history of exhibiting exceptional student art.
