General Information
The High School Art Academy is a comprehensive workshop experience for Tennessee high school students.
These one-day workshops take place in the Art + Architecture Building on the UT campus and are open to all Tennessee High School students.
Our goals are to give Tennessee high school students the opportunity for intensive study in the visual art, to encourage students to pursue a college education in the arts by giving them the opportunity to work in a university environment, and to introduce students to the facilities, professors, and resources offered by the University of Tennessee School of Art.
High School Art Academy will take place Saturday, October 21, 2023.
UT School of Art faculty, staff, alumni, and graduate students teach workshops in the Art + Architecture Building.
Workshop Option Specifics
Painting + Drawing 1
Instructor: LaKesha Lee, MFA Graduate Student
Introduction to Collage
Students will learn how to deconstruct and reconstruct found and self-made images through collage.
Painting + Drawing 2 – (Painting + Drawing 2 has reached capacity – Please choose another workshop)
Instructor: Griffin Allman, MFA Graduate Student
Iterative Painting: From Representation to Abstraction
In Iterative Painting, participants will explore the links between representational and abstract painting. Everyone will begin by creating a representational painting of a still life object or found object provided by the instructor. Then, participants will create multiple versions of abstract paintings based on the original painting. Methods of abstraction, historical context, and strategies for arriving at abstracted work will be discussed throughout the workshop.
Drawing & Bookmaking: Paper Engineering – Fun with Pop-up Books – (This workshop has been cancelled)
Instructor: Beauvais Lyons, Faculty member
This workshop will introduce principles of paper engineering to create pop-up books. Students will start by making a series of basic forms that use the principles of converging and parallel folds to learn some of the principles. Through the study of a collection of different pop-up books, students will have an opportunity to make a set of four pop-up books. Paper, glue and Xacto blades will be provided. Students should bring personal image sources and their favorite drawing media. For examples see: Visit YouTube Example.
Ceramics – (Ceramics has reached capacity – Please choose another workshop)
Instructor: Frank Martin, Professor of Ceramics
Limited Registration (12 Maximum)
This class will explore the use of finishing and firing techniques. Students will combine traditional and non-traditional methods while working with pre-fired tiles to explore various processes and concepts. The tiles will be Raku fired under staff supervision.
Photography
Instructor: Bruce Cole, Lecturer
Limited Registration (12 Maximum)
This workshop looks at the basics of good photography. Learn about using a camera and photographic fundamentals such as aperture, shutter speed, light, focus, metering, and shooting modes. Students will learn the difference between digital and analog photography and how a dark room works.
Metal Sculpture
Instructor: Abby Hedley, MFA Graduate Student
Limited Registration (10 Maximum)
Students will learn basic metalworking techniques including cutting, shaping, and welding steel. This workshop will empower students to create a sculpture using a combination of steel, wood, and found materials. All students must dress in non-flammable cotton clothing (jeans and cotton t-shirt and closed-toe shoes or boots). Safety equipment, tools and materials will be provided.
Letterpress
Instructors: Gaby Hurtado-Ramos, MFA Graduate Student
Limited Registration (6 Maximum)
Join us in the letterpress shop where we will be printing abstract book covers from vintage wood type on a Vandercook printing press. Explore color theory and layering through shape and letterform in dynamic compositions. You’ll also learn some basic bookbinding methods to create a finished book. If you have ever been interested in printmaking, typography, design, bookmaking, or zinemaking, this workshop will be a great fit. At the end of the day, you’ll leave with a few finished pieces that you can use for artist’s books, journals, zines, or anything you can think of!
Printmaking 1
Instructor: Ashlee Mays, MFA Alumna
Limited Registration (12 Maximum)
The Foraged Matrix
Join Ashlee Mays, director of the Museum of Infinite Outcomes, and explore the living world through the matrix of screen printing. The morning will kick off with a hands on screen printing demonstration and an open-air foraging session. After lunch, we will work in pairs to create unique compositions with our foraged materials, and through screen printing we will work in multiple colors building up layers while working collectively. All supplies will be provided. This is a beginner level course, no drawing or printing experience required. Students leave with two unique prints on paper.
Printmaking 2 – (This workshop has been cancelled)
Instructor: Elysia Mann, MFA Alumna and Printmaking Workshop Technician
Limited Registration (12 Maximum)
Pixels on Paper—Laser-engraved Woodblock Printmaking
Bring the artificial world into the physical realm using AI and woodblock printmaking! Explore how color, pattern, and glitch can be layered to create complex and surprising prints that you can’t get from a robot. Using AI image generators as a starting point, we will manipulate the code, make basic Photoshop edits, then transfer our pixelated files to a Laser Engraver to handle the hard work of carving. The afternoon will be all analog, using traditional printmaking inks and tools to transfer the engraved matrix to paper, layering different blocks on the same sheet. Everyone will leave with 4-6 colorful, surreal compositions that blend image and abstraction; the machine and the hand.
Printmaking 3
Instructor: Jake Ingram, MFA Alumni
Limited Registration (12 Maximum)
Rock and Roll! – Lithographic Concert Posters
In this one day course, students will use photo lithography to create a one color lithograph for a real or imaginary band of their choice. Students will have a brief introduction to the lithographic process and will learn how to make and print their own plates.
