Study Abroad with the School of Art
The School of Art offers courses in art and art history abroad during the academic year and summer for students to earn credit towards a major, minor, or electives. Many opportunities are available to both graduate and undergraduate students.
Faculty Directed Programs
Drawing and Book Arts in Florence ART 229/499 | UNHO 491 (3 credits)
Beauvais Lyons, Chancellor’s Professor of Art, will provide students with an immersive experience in Florence, creating drawings, collages and small books interpreting the city, its people, architecture, art, science, and history. The course is formulated to accommodate introductory students with no prior studio art experience as well as art majors needing upper-division studio credits. The home base for the course will be the Santa Reparata International School of Art, where we will have access to a drawing and book arts studio, and which arranges for apartment housing and 24/7 support services. This course takes place during the summer mini-term.
Contemporary Art + Fashion in Milan ART 491 (3 credits)
Joshua Bienko, professor of art, helps students immerse themselves in the Italian culture, architecture, art, and history of Milan. Experience in drawing is not required. Milan is recognized worldwide as the fashion and design capital of the world and home to top fashion houses. Students will tour museums and fashion houses, then put their inspirations down on paper. This course takes place during Summer Session I.
Art History in Paris ARTH 173/479 (3 credits)
Mary Campbell, professor of art history, shows students some of the greatest works of Western art. The program will be based at our partner’s study center on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, just steps away from the historic Place de la Bastille. Students and faculty will tour and discuss works at Paris’s numerous museums. This Summer Session 2 course fulfills general education or degree requirements in art history. Scholarships for Study Abroad
The School of Art and Programs Abroad at the UT Center for International Education provide esstential resources for students interested in study abroad. Visit the Programs Abroad website to learn about the broad range of department-led study abroad programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
The Programs Abroad office holds daily information session at 2 p.m. Students can receive walk-in peer advising from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Programs Abroad office is located at 1620 Melrose Hall.
Orin B. and Emma G. Graf Study Abroad Scholarship
Orin B. and Emma G. Graf Study Abroad Scholarships are awarded each spring by the UT School of Art. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate majors in art or art history or graduate majors in studio art. Undergraduate majors must have completed 18 credit hours at UTK before the study abroad commences. The scholarship committee typically selects 1–5 applicants. Award amounts have varied from $500–$2,700 per student.
CGE Study Abroad Scholarship
The Center for International Education offers scholarships for student studying abroad in any term. Award amounts are as follows: Award amounts are as follows: $750 for mini-term, spring break and summer programs; $1,250 for semester, academic year and calendar year programs.
Note: Students are eligible to receive study abroad scholarships from the School of Art and the Center for International Education at the same time.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.
The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Research in the Arts Scholarship
The Research in Arts Scholarship represents a creative partnership between the Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) and the School of Art, bringing together two elements: financial support and comprehensive training in research skills and professional development. Under the direction of School of Art faculty member Mary Campbell and OUR program directors, Research in Arts Scholarship recipients participate in the School of Art Art History in Paris (ARTH 173) and produce research-based art projects from idea to installation. This program is directly based on a program created by the University of South Florida.
