Danqi Cai [dan-CHI Tsai] is a Spring 2023 graduate of the MFA program at the University of Tennessee School of Art. The program is proud to announce that she has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Foundations at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, beginning in the Fall of 2023.

Chloe Baker is a Spring 2023 graduate from the University of Tennessee’s School of Art with a Bachelors of Fine Arts and a concentration in 4D Studio Arts. Beginning in January 2022, while still in school, she had the incredible opportunity to kick-start her professional journey with an internship at Loch & Key Productions.

Emily Roca Rice of Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a 2023 graduate who studied studio art with a concentration in painting and drawing.

Delany Bal is an American sculptor focused on fusing digital fabrication with ancient artistic practices. Working to master this hybrid craft, she integrates digital technology with cast and fabricated metals, ceramics, woodworking, and experimental surface treatments.

This set of works is described in a short article titled Bysymmetry and Combinations.

The UT School of Art is pleased to announce that Landin Eldridge will serve as Director for Gallery 1010 for the 2023-2024 exhibition season. Landin previously served as Associate Director during the 2022-2023 year. Kaitlyn Anderson has been named the Associate Director of Gallery 1010 for 2023-2024.

Elaine McMillion Sheldon, assistant professor of Cinema Studies at University of Tennessee’s School of Art. and filmmaker has been tapped as director for a narrative feature film on the life of Mary Harris Jones — the indomitable labor figure known to history as Mother Jones.

For over 20 years, Handheld has biannually screened the best student work produced in Cinema Studies and Time-Based Art courses.

Established in 1993 The Ellen McClung Berry Professorship was name in honor of Ellen Lawson McClung Berry, who had a life-long love of the arts. This fund provides for Professorships in the School of Art to support and enhance faculty research and creative activity.

Each year the University of Tennessee College of Arts and Sciences seeks to recognize faculty members who excel in scholarship and creative activity while also being fully engaged in the other responsibilities of faculty jobs, primarily teaching and service.

These workshops cover some of the great tools we have available in the smART Lab that might be of interest to students in all areas. The workshops are open to all students enrolled in art classes.

An opening reception will be held from 5-7pm Friday, March 24.

Elysia Mann is the printmaking studio technician at the University of Tennessee School of Art. She oversees the maintenance of presses and tools used in the print facilities including intaglio, lithography, relief, letterpress, and screen print.

Circus Orbis – See to Believe is curated by Beauvais Lyons, who is both Director of the Hokes Archives, as well as a Chancellor’s Professor of Art at the University of Tennessee.

Kay Dartt, Shepherd University professor and metal sculptor, comes to the UT School of Art on Thursday, February 23, at 7:30pm for a lecture. Dartt’s creative practice combines sculpture, engineering, education, and community outreach. She teaches sculpture courses, engineering courses, and manages an interdisciplinary fabrication space called the FASTEnER Lab.

Tim Hiles, Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Art History at the School of Art will be presenting on Thursday, February 16, at the College Art Association (CAA) Annual Conference in New York City. Hiles is presenting with 2022 MFA graduate Ashley Ekstrum who worked with him as a research assistant prior to graduation and who has collaborated on research since.

“Unearned Optimism,” an exhibition of screenprints by Mathew Hopson-Walker is on view from February 7 – March 30, 2023 at the Printmaking Showcase Gallery. The gallery is located on the second floor of the UT Knoxville Art and Architecture Building in the west wing.

University of Tennessee art students have collaborated on an outdoor sculpture project near Dogwood Elementary School that both enhances the outdoor classrooms and gives the larger community exposure to the arts.

Handheld is a festival of student films, videos, animations, and audio works held at the UT School of Art. It is a biannual film festival made up of the best and most interesting work being made in Time-Based Art (TBA) classes from foundations to graduate levels.

The artwork of Jackson Jalomo will be exhibited at Gallery 1010 on December 9 and 10, 2022. The exhibition is titled “Jusqu’ici.”

Yilan Chang Dukes arrived in the United States in 2008. She had been born and raised to that time in Mainland China, the only child in a family where art was an important part of life. Her mother’s artistic passion was dance. Her grandfather and uncle were musicians.

Tim’s research centers on Italian Renaissance art, and on visual intersections of power and gender (particularly masculinity) more broadly, in addition to histories of fashion and material culture

Kaitlyn Anderson was born and raised in North Georgia. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 3D Studio Arts from Georgia Southern University in 2022.

Ruchi Singh is an interdisciplinary artist from India. She likes to complement her artworks with a piece of writing.

The Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture hosted the 2018 Artist-In-Residence Biennial Exhibition this past January. Featuring the four most recent resident artists, Ezra Tessler (fall 2016), Dana DeGiulio (spring 2017), Clare Grill (fall 2017), and Caitlin Cherry (spring 2018), the exhibition showcased this group’s diverse styles of work. The January 12th reception drew a large crowd of alumni and current students, many of whom commented on the difference between seeing the works in person and seeing slides during lectures.

Erica Mendoza, a third-year MFA student in sculpture, received an award for her series #WasteHerTime2013to2017 at the 2017 SECAC (formerly the Southeast College Art Conference), hosted by the Columbus College of Art and Design.
