UT alum puts photography skills to work for Young-Williams

Hannah Overton, a 2016 UT alumna, majored in English Literature but took as many art classes as she could fit in her schedule. “Creativity has always been one of the most important parts of my life,” she says. As a kid, she would split her time equally between reading and writing, making art, and doing theater. She took photos with disposable cameras, used Microsoft Paint and Windows Movie Maker to create stop-motion videos, and spent a lot of time sketching.

Narratives play a prominent theme in junior Jace Hermanto’s artistic practice. He became interested in mythology at a young age because of its use of fictional worlds and creatures. This fall, the Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture presents Irons in the Fire: UT Sculpture Alumni Exhibition in conjunction with the 2018 Mid-South Sculpture Alliance Conference, which is co-hosted by the UT Sculpture program. This three-day conference will bring hundreds of artists to Knoxville, including the renowned sculptor and printmaker Chakaia Booker, who will give a keynote address at the Knoxville Museum of Art and open her solo exhibition at the UT Downtown Gallery, both on Friday, Oct. 5.

Before she graduated from UT in 2009, Leanne Moe-McQueen was already planning her pottery business. While still an undergraduate student, she designed her first kiln with Frank Martin, associate professor of ceramics, and opened a small studio at 212 East Harper Street in Maryville, Tennessee. Within a few years of earning her BFA, McQueen had moved Studio 212 into a much larger building, expanded her business to offer community art classes, and established her brand, McQueen Pottery.
