Raquel Riemer grew up in Shawano, WI, just 40 minutes north of Green Bay. She attended the University of Wisconsin Green Bay where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education and Studio Art. Specializing in ceramics, Raquel received “Outstanding Senior Show” with her pieces relating to hardships faced by her tribe (Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin) and many others. After graduating, she went on to teach art at the Menominee Indian High School for a year before becoming a candidate for a Master of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics at UTK.

Artist Statement

As a ceramicist, the subject of Raquel’s work mainly focuses on losses experienced by her tribe and tribes across the continent. She is a first-descendant of the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin and explores the representation of that loss through the skull as a form and as a symbol of death. Other aspects of her work focus on just the skull as a form and what can be done with it.
