Friend of a Friend

Bucky Miller | Assistant Professor of Photography

photo of the exhibition

To be a friend of a friend implies a curious sort of kinship; a person we, like, kinda know. This exhibit began with us sharing artists we were individually familiar with, and brought together works that centered slippery relationships with the familiar. Through disparate methods, these artists find ways to rethink, animate, transform, and even suggest some very regular stuff. Materials so common that they’re often invisible surprise us by pretending to be alive. In a weird way, these artworks become our “friends.” They might love us back if we pet them, elicit from us an empathetic wince, or send us rooting for them as they embark upon searches through memory and conjecture.

The artists in Friend of a Friend find gravity through lightness, and vice versa. They gesture toward the enormous possibility contained in the ordinary things around us. They are worth getting to know. We can vouch.

Participating Artists:

Camille Casemeier, Chelsea Couch, Rebekka Federle, Celeste Fincher, Abigail Hedley, Megan Lee, Rebecca Moss, Roula Partheniou, + Dave Dyment, & Yuko Yamaguchi
