Student Profile: Ruchi Singh

August 1, 2022

Ruchi Singh

Ruchi Singh is an interdisciplinary artist from India. She likes to complement her artworks with a piece of writing.

Ruchi Singh was brought up in a very small town in India. This allowed her to stay close to nature, culture, and traditions of rural India, and her artworks are inspired from the same. She completed a Bachelor of Design from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Later, she worked at various places as a graphic designer and taught as a faculty at various design institutes.

During all this time of gaining experience in design, Singh was always driven towards fine arts. She would write poems and shoot videos for them. She would make art that could act as a trigger for a positive change of mind. Through her work, she has been inspired to make art that brings positive changes in the society.

At the University of Tennessee School of Art, Ruchi Singh will pursue a Master’s in Fine Arts with a concentration in Time-based Art.

She loves to travel and in her free time you can find her gardening, reading, or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen.

Artist Statement

I look within as much as I look out. My work deals with the whole journey of ‘introspection’ – discursive thinking, remembrance, connecting thoughts, gathering them, entering into a mysterious space, examining the reality, search for the truth – and the ‘growth of the soul’ involved in this whole process. I enjoy complementing my visual art with writing and vice-a-versa. Artworks by Shitao (Zhu Ruoji) and Ni Zan encourage me to find a harmonious relationship between word and image. Reading Van Gogh’s writings about his paintings and Egon Schiele’s poems linked with his artworks inspires me as well.

I feel that both of the art forms – writing and visual arts – are married since they came into existence, in a bitter-sweet relationship. Through my art, I want to lead the viewer towards an adventurous and truth-seeking journey of introspection.
