Sculpture Students Partner with Dogwood Elementary for Outdoor Art Exhibit

November 29, 2022

Sculpture

The University of Tennessee School of Art and Dogwood Elementary would welcomed visitors to the Dogwood Community Trail on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 1:00 PM, to celebrate the wonderful artwork created by UT Sculpture students.

Associate Professor Jason Brown and the Dogwood Outdoor Coalition worked together to make this exhibition possible. The UT students are all undergraduate BFA/BA 3D studio art majors in the UT School of Art. As a part of their Sculpture class assignments, students have been focused on learning more about public art this semester. For most of the students, this site-specific outdoor sculpture project was their first experience installing their artwork outside in the natural elements beyond the interior spaces of the studio or gallery.

Artwork was created by the following UT School of Art students:
Oralia Rose-Mariea Acosta, Catie Bringle, Amanda Mcdonald, Courtney Mcgreevy, Faiza Narsinghani, Kenzie Sink, Jo Sutton, Ina Vos, and S.K. Yi.

“This is so exciting. Our school worked to get art on campus for several years.” said Principal Lana Shelton-Lowe. The Dogwood Community Trail has been developed and enhanced over the last 7 years as a Community Schools led project to promote outdoor education and healthy lifestyles in the community. As a Community School, Dogwood’s campus is open to the public when school is not in session. The public is invited to come out and visit the Trail and Artwork .

The exhibition is temporary and will run through December 9, 2022. Three of the nine sculptures have been fabricated with steel and/or concrete and are more durable and weather resistant. These three projects will remain on view for another year through the end of 2023. Hopefully, this is the first of future projects and a new partnership between UT Sculpture and School of Art with Dogwood Elementary School and the Dogwood Community Trail.
