Sam Yates Study Room Dedication
The Sam Yates Study Room in the Ewing Gallery was dedicated on Friday April 21. A gathering of faculty and staff of the UT School of Art, representatives of the school’s development council, friends of the school, and donors, as well as the guest of honor, Sam Yates, joined for the celebration.
Yates was director of the Ewing Gallery and a professor at the school from 1980 until his retirement last year. In honor of Sam Yates and the work he did for students and the school, a fund was established to create a named space. Last week, the hybrid event allowed Knoxville friends to attend in person and others across the country to join via Zoom
Director Christopher McNulty, spoke, reviewing the many successes and accomplishments of Yates and his work at the school. Then the unveiling of the plaque took place and Yates made some short comments.
Contributions made to the fund will be used to support the conservation, study, and exhibition of the Ewing Gallery Collection which Yates was instrumental in developing over the course of his career at UT.
