Artist Statement
My work is an exploration of the relationships, events, and memories that have affected me most heavily throughout my life. I manipulate and transform my personal photographs into prints and paintings as a way to work through the emotions and trauma that still affect me. I am interested in how viewers respond to my work; can someone with no relationship to the figures portrayed still see the love between a mother and her children, or the tension of a holiday family photo taken right before a couple gets divorced? I select pictures that reveal little passages of the underlying atmosphere, sorting through the posed family photos for ones where the cracks in our façade peek through. In this ongoing body of work, I share these feelings with my viewers in the hopes that they can emotionally connect with the concepts and relationships being represented.
