Artists Visit the School of Art

Polish printmaking exchange students Łucja Bańkowska and Julia Blaszczyk visited the School of Art this fall as part of a long-standing exchange program with the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw, Poland.
During their time in Tennessee, they exhibited a show, “Who Turned the Light On?” at Gallery 1010 in downtown Knoxville.
“Coming here was really valuable,” said Bańkowska. “When you change your environment, it’s a boost to make something new, to think differently.”

Esteban del Valle, an interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York, was the SOA’s fall 2024 artist in residence. In addition to giving a public lecture, he taught a seminar as well as Drawing III and Painting III.

Filmmaker Cecelia Condit exhibited a collection of video works in the Ewing Gallery through late October. She also gave a public lecture as part of the Denbo Center for Humanities and the Arts Distinguished Lecture Series.

In September, the Downtown Gallery exhibited Lore: What We Were Told | What We Saw | What We Tell Ourselves, the sophomore portfolio from Black Women of Print. Members Althea Murphy-Price, a professor in the printmaking program, Karen Revis, and Tanekeya Word gave a panel discussion as part of Denbo Center’s Distinguished Lecture Series.
The Whitney Museum of American Art acquired three screen prints with collage from Murphy-Price that was part of Lore, “Lesson 1: the weeds / Lesson 2: seeds / Lesson 3: puncture.”
Black Women of Print member LaToya M. Hobbs also visited the SOA at the end of September to give a public lecture and work with printmaking graduate students.
Atlanta-based artist William Downs was the final exhibition of the year at the Downtown Gallery. Downs lectured at the SOA and completed a large-scale wall drawing at the gallery during his visit to Knoxville.
