May 13, 2023

The artwork of Koichi Yamamoto has been featured in the 27th issue of “Actuel: l’estampe contemporaine” magazine (Current: Contemporary Print). This set of works is described in a short article titled Bysymmetry and Combinations. He explains that copper etching or engraving with a chisel is a simple process of intaglio engraving, but which brings a complex visual language of values and forms. “I am interested,” he explains, “in discovering the illusion of unexpected forms with content that is made of such visual languages.”

Koichi Yamamoto, professor of printmaking at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, School of Art, is an artist who merges traditional and contemporary techniques so as to develop unique and innovative approaches to the language of printmaking. His prints explore issues of the sublime, atmosphere and fluid mechanics. He has worked at many scales, from small and meticulously engraved copper plates to large monotypes.
Koichi Yamamoto
Yamamoto completed a BFA at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon and then moved to Krakow, Poland, and after some time, studied engraving at the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts in the Slovak Republic. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland and completed an MFA at the University of Alberta, Canada. In addition he has worked as a textile designer in Fredericia, Denmark.

Yamamoto has exhibited internationally. He has taught at Utah State University and the University of Delaware and is currently teaching at UT.
