Where and When to Be Advised
Before Your First Semester in the School of Art:
Prior to your first semester in the School of Art you will be advised by the Associate Director who will place you, depending on your needs and availability of seats, in some first-year art courses (Art 101, 102, 103, and 100-level art history courses).
After this initial advising session students needing Art 101, 102, and 103 will be advised as follows:
After Your First Semester in the School of Art:
BFA in Graphic Design
If your are pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design, you will be advised by the Graphic Design faculty. They can authorize you to be placed in appropriate first-year art courses (101, 102, 103). Graphic Design holds group advising sessions that are announced on a banner in the atrium; if you cannot attend one of these, you should see a faculty member during his/her office hours.
BA in Art History
If you are pursuing a BA in Art History, you may be advised by any member of the permanent Art History faculty. You may obtain information about art history advisors in the School of Art office (974.3407).
BA or BFA in Studio Art
If your are pursuing a BA or a BFA in Studio Art, you should see the Associate Director for advising until you have completed the 101, 102, 103 sequence. To do so, you should make an appointment through Sophia Emmett in the School of Art office (974.3407)
If you are pursuing a BA or a BFA in Studio Art, once you have completed 101, 102, and 103 and have identified an area in which you wish to take upper division classes (for the BA) or do a concentration (for the BFA), you should be advised in that area. You can obtain information about advisors in each concentration area in the School of Art office.
If You have not yet identified an area of study, you may continue to see the Associate Director fro advising. However, once you have passed portfolio review, you must see an advisor in your area
