ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In order to become a candidate in a degree program, the applicant must be admitted by the Graduate School upon the recommendation of the School of Art. Both the Graduate School and the School of Art have specific requirements and application procedures which must be satisfied by the application.

Graduate School Admission Requirements:
The requirements of the Graduate School, types of admission, and admission procedures are listed in the Graduate School Catalog which can be accessed online at http://web.utk.edu/~gsinfo.

School of Art Admission Requirements:

In addition to the requirements of the Graduate School, application to the School of Art requires seven items:

1. An undergraduate major in art, or equivalent proficiency.
2. A portfolio of work (*see below) with a numbered slide list, including size, medium, and date for each piece.
3. At least three letters of recommendation concerning your experience in art (should include former art professors).
4. A concise paragraph outlining your undergraduate experience, including:
a. name and contact information
b. areas of concentration.
c. specific degrees obtained.
d. anything you would like the committee to particularly recognize about your undergraduate education.
5. An equally concise paragraph of your intentions as a graduate student, including:
a. name and contact information
b. the proposed area of concentration.
c. interest in assistantship.
d. semester you wish to begin graduate courses at The University of Tennessee.
6. A brief artist's statement.
7. School of Art Graduate Applicant Information Sheet (download the information sheet).
8. Copy of unofficial transcript from the most recent university attended. (Official transcripts should be sent directly to Graduate Admissions)

Printmaking:
A portfolio of at least 20 slides, 15 of which represent work in printmaking. When possible, include slides of work in a variety of print mediums. Additional slides of drawings, paintings, and sculpture are encouraged. Please do not send your portfolio in a folder or notebook. Ship or deliver the portfolio to:

Evaluation and Acceptance:
The applicant's materials, listed above, will be evaluated by the faculty of the applicant's media concentration. Greatest emphasis is placed on the quality of the applicant's portfolio. Notification of Departmental action will be sent, along with Graduate School results, as soon after this evaluation as possible.

Transfers:
The School will consider transfer graduate students with the same procedures as outlined above. Specific regulations of the Graduate School limit the number of credits which will be accepted. The School of Art will not necessarily, and seldom does, accept this maximum. Actual credit hours to be applied to the degree will be determined by the Graduate Committee and area faculty in which the student has applied.
