May 7-30, 2008 at the Santa Reparata School of Art
Instructor: Beauvais Lyons
Art 299/499 Special Topics: "Sketchbook Florence” will offer a studio art experience in the visual arts encompassing drawing, design and book arts in Florence, Italy. The course will involve the exploration of visually and historically rich Florence, Italy through a series of assignments leading to the creation of an artist book. This three-credit course may be taken by introductory students with no prior studio art experience as well as art majors needing upper-division studio electives. The instructor, Beauvais Lyons has taught art at the University of Tennessee since 1985.
Florence is a superb setting for the studio arts, as it was here that the Renaissance took root and flourished in the 15th century. Studio activities undertaken throughout the city will be complemented by visits to the Uffizi and other collections/location in the city as well as trips to Sienna and San Gimignano. The final project of the course will be a visual book developed from the course lessons with Florence as its subject.
