Bachelor of Fine Arts

About the BFA

The B.F.A. in Studio Art (2D) is a professionally-oriented degree especially intended for those students planning careers or graduate study in the visual arts. All students seeking studio degrees (B.A. Studio, B.F.A. Studio and Art Education, B.F.A. Graphic Design) must present and pass the appropriate Portfolio Review for their area of study in order to be admitted into advanced courses. Contact specific program area faculty for review schedule and details. It should not be assumed that a high grade point average in the major, in itself, assures passing Portfolio Review.

The Portfolio Review is recommended in the sophomore year and is intended to provide students with an overview assessment of their potential for success in the intended area of study early enough to allow a student to make a program change should that be advisable. Students who do not pass Portfolio Review are provided with options including re-doing a portfolio for re-submission during the next review cycle.

All studio courses require 3 hours per week attendance for each credit hour earned. Completing the B.F.A. program may take more than 8 semesters. Students are urged to seek departmental advisement each semester to ensure proper scheduling. Transfer students are advised that a minimum of 21 hours in studio courses, and 6 upper-division hours in art history must be earned at UT-Knoxville. Transfer students who expect to enroll in 300 (junior level) courses must take either Painting 214 or Drawing 212 at UTK and present a portfolio of 10-15 works, the majority of which must be in their major area of concentration. No grade below “C” in art courses may be applied to the B.F.A. major. A minimum of 40 credit hours, 300 level or above, must be earned prior to graduation. Students may take advanced courses in Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, 4D, Printmaking, and Sculpture after passing the appropriate portfolio course.
