They are both technically wonderful still photography and video lenses. Both are fast lenses which are great shooting in low light and/or with a shallow depth of field.

16-35mm F/2.8 (Canon)

  • Ultra-wide angle
  • Good for full body shots in very small spaces
  • Can show distortion and vignetting around focal length 16-20mm.
  • Need to control your set well to make this lens work to your advantage.
  • Shoot at f2.8 for shallow depth of field.
  • f4 to f5.6 are the sharpest focal length.
  • APS-C to 35mm focal length equivalency: 26 – 56 mm

24-70mm F/2.8 (Sigma)

  • Wide angle-Telephoto
  • A great all-purpose street photography lens.
  • Can show distortion and vignetting around focal length 24mm.
  • Good for close ups in small spaces, and full body in larger spaces.
  • Good for documenting your work (due to less distortion throughout).
  • Good lens to use when you have to shoot in unstructured environments.
  • Shoot at f2.8 for shallow depth of field.
  • f4 – f8 are the sharpest focal lengths.
  • APS-C to 35mm focal length equivalency: 38 – 112 mm
