ABOUT THE MFA The Graphic Design graduate program at the University of Tennessee encourages discourse, research and critical investigation into design issues. It is a place in which students are encouraged to push their expectations and perception of not only the field of design, but also their role in that field. The first 2-years are spent in classes exploring various concepts and models relevant to the field of visual communications. In the third year of study, students are responsible for developing, executing and defending a thesis project. Along with other School of Art MFA candidates, these projects culminate in an exhibit at the School of Art’s Ewing Gallery. Students who do not have an undergraduate degree in Graphic Design and wish to pursue their Masters may be asked to complete a foundation design year before they can be officially accepted into the graduate Design program. This year will consist of design classes in the undergraduate sequence. Once this year is complete, the applicant will re-apply to the Design graduate program. It is only after review of the work completed that year will they then be accepted into the Design graduate program. The Design faculty is looking for committed, enthusiastic students who are engaged in the process of design. This is not a program meant for students who are only looking to strengthen their portfolio or increase their technical expertise. Current MFA Students include ::
